Uphold the Law

3/4/25 letter to Whatcom County Council:

Thirty years ago, when I led North Cascades Audubon Society et al to victory at the Washington Supreme Court--establishing legal precedent for Critical Areas protection statewide--little did I think at the time that I would need to go to federal court decades later to force the State of Washington to uphold the law. Both Whatcom County and the State of Washington have turned a blind eye to official corruption in Blaine, despite our numerous letters over the last two years to the Washington Attorney General, Washington Department of Ecology, Whatcom County Council, Whatcom County Executive, and Whatcom County Prosecutor asking for help.

This willful negligence by county and state authorities has allowed the City of Blaine to violate county, state, and federal laws with impunity. Whatcom County won't even protect Blaine citizens from assault by public officials at Blaine City Council meetings. Our civil rights are stomped on daily. What is wrong with you people? Is integrity something of a bygone era? Shame on you.

Letter to Community Development Services

As an observer of Growth Management in Washington state since it was passed into law thirty-three years ago, I cannot recall a more egregious example of the intentional subversion of both the letter and spirit of the law by a city than what has transpired in Blaine. Not only did Community Development Services (CDS) fail to convene public participation--as required by law--in deciding how to go about creating a new economic development plan for downtown, but they also predetermined the desired outcome in cahoots with developers. BLAINE COMMUNITY FORUM Ending the Culture of Exclusion at Blaine City Hall As the city of Blaine experienced unprecedented growth over the last couple of years, citizens from Semiahmoo, Salishan and East Blaine contributed ideas on how to protect critical areas (city aquifer, Cain Creek, Drayton Harbor), how to kickstart prosperity at our civic center (new library, art center), and how to facilitate meaningful public participation in planning our future.
