Marine Park Garbage Dump

When we stopped Whatcom County Water District #10 from using the Lake Whatcom reservoir for its sewer overflows in 1993, the county was reluctant to call the lake a 'reservoir' despite the fact it is the reservoir for the City of Bellingham's drinking water.

Today, living in Blaine, I find it bewildering that the City of Blaine historically chose to dump its garbage on the tide flats of Semiahmoo Bay, later covering the toxic waste site with dirt to form the present day Marine Park, where toxins still leach onto the beach and into Drayton Harbor.

Up until the 1990s, Whatcom County operated a dump that drained into Lake Whatcom, and was responsible for kokanee salmon kills from toxic chemicals that washed down the creek. The county government is presently ignoring pollution of Blaine's drinking water in the CARA.

The CARA (Critical Aquifer Recharge Area) is now being destroyed by Lynden developer, Skip Jansen, due to corruption in Blaine Community Development Services, led by Alex Wenger. Whatcom County Planning is allowing Wenger to break the law with impunity.

Due to pollution of the Lake Whatcom reservoir from residential development in the watershed, the City of Bellingham has had to spend hundreds of millions of dollars building treatment plants to remove toxins from its drinking water.

By contrast, Seattle purchased the Green River watershed for its drinking water, which undeveloped remains clean.
