Sheep Protecting Wolves
5/9/25 letter to City of Blaine from Madame Watchdog:
Many of you know exactly what’s happening behind the curtain. You’ve seen it unfold—and in some cases, you’ve helped make it happen.
You’ve watched developers try to pave over wetlands without conducting a single environmental study. You’ve watched as civil rights were trampled—even those of children—simply for trying to speak at council meetings.
You’ve watched as outspoken citizens were targeted, silenced, and even threatened with arrest, not because they broke the law, but because they dared to point out that you did. You have watched council members vote with a conflict of interest again and again and again. You have watched our town become the worst free speech town in America. You have watched the mayor, Richard May, and the city's lawyer, Peter Ruffatto, hijack the motion to restore public comments. The ban still continues...and yet you still just silently watch.
You’ve watched law enforcement, Sheriff Tanksley and Chief Funk, along with county prosecutor Eric Richey, refuse to investigate their own when city officials crossed the line. You have watched rocks be delivered—week after week—by a developer whose business directly benefited from your votes. And yet, you never reported it. You never questioned it. You let it happen. You all just keep watching.
Why?
Because at some point, you stopped leading and started following.
You became a flock of sheep—protecting each other, protecting the institution, protecting your own political safety.
But now, you’re no longer just protecting the flock.
You’ve become just another one of the flock.
So I ask: Who among you will stand apart?
Who will break from the herd and speak the truth out loud?
Who will show the courage to say, “Enough”?
Because if you stay silent—if you continue to toe the line while citizens are harassed, wetlands are threatened, and civil rights are violated—you are not just complicit. You are a participant.
The citizens are watching. We know who benefits. We know who stays quiet. And we know what it means when no one is willing to rise.
Because history rarely remembers the sheep.
Madame Watchdog (someone who refuses to watch)
